VMQ can cause erratic virtual machine network performance when enabled, such as latency and dropped network connections. This is especially common with Broadcom Gigabit network adapters. The NIC will become disconnected for approximately one second after you run this command:. The support article you reference also mentions that the problem was fixed in the latest Broadcom drivers.

The updated drivers worked for me, but this is certainly a good workaround. I've still been running into this issue on fully patched servers, so I'm not sure if the new drivers aren't coming down through WU and I need to download them myself or what. This workaround has been a life saver over the past couple weeks as I've been installing new servers and ironing out the kinks.

Excellent and easy solution to something we've been banging out heads against for a while now. Thanks so much! The official MS Support blog also mentions the Broadcom problems, but their solution was a joke and didn't even explain how to view the status.

Thousand thumbs up for this post! Checked the device manager to find that the Broadcom NICs were still using a device driver fromeven though I've used the most recent version of the Dell Server Update utility to update the drivers and firmware.

But your post made it very easy to disable VMQ on all adapters. Life saver, I've been banging my head for 2 days on and off.

Guest Vm's was between 20 and 40 seconds for the same file. Tried nice teaming, external v switch, interna v switch.

It seemed, in the limited testing we did, to make a little difference, over VMLB, but not much. I would like to have the kit available to do some proper testing. Yes please, I don't want to post my email adress on this forum though, how can I get this to you? Regards Austin.I just spent the last 2 days pulling my hair out because I had accidentally enabled VMQ on one of the NICs, which completely destroyed the networking performance of my VMs. I realize that different vendors have different settings, but most are in common. I also realize that these settings may vary depending on your environment, but I would at least like a starting point.

I'm half-tempted to just disable everything, but I suspect that some of these can really help with performance.

So, here are some of the settings I'm wondering about:. Usually problems seen with Terminal Server VMs.

Personally, I would also check the firmware of the NIC drivers, and not use manufacturer drivers unless necessary. Broadcom NICs has always been problematic. Disclaimer: Attempting change is of your own free will. So, for eons MSFT has been at the mercy of the hardware vendors on this one. And many of us 'old farts' simply tweak these settings out or practice. Frankly, only within the last year or so have the vendors started to get it right where these no longer need to be manually tweaked.

New Intel NICs are excellent. Broadcom is still all over the place. Any other brand you get what you pay for. Also, if you tweak these settings, do it at the physical NIC driver. This affects all VMs, automatically. The way that it is designed is that if it is enabled on the physical, the vNIC should get it by default. And in the releases of Hyper-V the problems first manifest in the synthetic NIC and second in the synthetic storage controllers. Prior tothere was no indication in any console that this might be the case, so it was not easily discoverable.

Many folks just assume that Windows Update handles this in the VM, but not so. This is the nature of synthetic virtual devices. The synthetic virtual device is dependent upon features of the physical device. If the feature is disable or not available at the physical device, then this feature cannot be used by the virtual device because it isn't available.

But if it is off at the physical then it is not available.

That was my original point. These articles are pretty useful:. Office Office Exchange Server. Not an IT pro?Broadcom network adapters have a very big issue in Windows with Hyper-V. The issue is so big that at one point a year or so ago when I deployed a new Hyper V server with Broadcomm NICs my domain users were unable to use VPN properly due to a crippling network latency.

The problem are Virtual Machine Queues, and on Broadcom network adapters they delay traffic to the VM and create latency issues. There is a quick fix for that though. All you need to so is disable Virtual Machine Queues on your network adapter. It takes 5 min to fix. To fix it, start up Powershell as an Administrator, then check to see if VMQ is enabled on your adapters, specifically anything by Broadcom.

See the below example for reference.

Virtual machines may randomly lose network connectivity. The network adapter seems to be working in the virtual machine. However, you cannot ping or access network resources from the virtual machine. Restarting the virtual machine does not resolve the issue.

You cannot ping or connect to a virtual machine from a remote computer. These symptoms may occur on some or all virtual machines on the server that is running Hyper-V. Restarting the server immediately resolves network connectivity to all the virtual machines. This is a known issue with Broadcom NetXtreme 1-gigabit network adapters that use the b57nd60a.

By default, VMQ is enabled by the Broadcom network driver. Broadcom designates these network adapters as 57xx based chipsets. They include, and These network adapters are also sold under different model numbers by some server OEMs. You may be using driver version This issue is resolved in Broadcom driver b57nd60a. In MarchBroadcom published driver version In AprilHP published version If you are unable to update your network adapter driver to resolve the issue, you can work around the issue by disabling VMQ on each affected Broadcom network adapter by using the Set-NetAdapterVmq Windows PowerShell command.

By default, VMQ is disabled on the Hyper-V virtual switch for virtual machines that are using 1-gigabit network adapters. VMQ is enabled on a Hyper-V virtual switch only when the system is using gigabit or faster network adapters. This means that by disabling VMQ on the Broadcom network adapter, you aren't losing network performance or any other benefits because this is the default. However, you need to do this to work around the driver issue. You will not see any virtual machine queues that are allocated to 1-gigabit network adapters by default.

Resolution This issue is resolved in Broadcom driver b57nd60a.A network adapter that supports the VMQ interface includes hardware that routes packets to receive queues. This requires parsing of the packet header and configuration of the queues on the network adapter. Routing the packets to queues and indicating all the packets on a queue to a VM allows concurrent receive processing for multiple VMs.

Every queue is serviced by a different processor. Routing to queues in the network adapter prevents a copy step to copy data from the network adapter receive buffers to the VM address space. In the figure, the miniport driver for the physical network adapter indicates received data up to the Hyper-V extensible switch component. This component acts as a network virtual service provider NetVSP and provides services to support networking access by the Hyper-V child partitions.

The services that the extensible switch provides includes routing packets to and from the virtual machine VM network adapters in the guest operating systems. The VM network adapter is exposed by the network virtual service client NetVSC that runs in the guest operating system.

How to Disable VMQ with PowerShell

Under VMQ, the physical network adapter transfers the data that matches a receive filter test for a VMQ directly to that queue. This prevents software processing in the extensible switch. Data that does not pass any filter tests goes to the default queue where the extensible switch must process the data.

In addition to preventing the routing and copying in the extensible switch, the receive interrupts for VM queues are assigned to different processors. Skip to main content. Contents Exit focus mode. When a miniport driver makes a receive indication, all of the packets are for the same VM queue. The following figure shows the synthetic data paths within the VMQ interface.
